AAPPO announces a new resource to help members and other PPOs identify value added strategies to their health care delivery services. AAPPO’s “Adding Value to PPO Services – A White Paper on Value Based Benefit Design” examines innovations for PPOs to offer more value to customers. The paper looks at VBBD strategies that could be adopted by risk or nonrisk network PPOs.
Throughout 2008 and 2009 AAPPO’s Adding Value initiative examines ways to improve the value of health care. Added Value strategies available to PPOs include:
Improving patient and payer decision-making about health and wellness
Designing network, pharmacy and care management programs to increase value
Enhancing patient adherence to improve outcomes and engage patients
Working with customers to design pharmacy benefits to improve chronic disease management
Applying incentives effectively to get behavior change results
Using value based health care to improve results for payers
Providing expert guidance on best practices strategies to improve outcomes
Offering up a high value physician network
The AAPPO Adding Value Initiative creates a members-only forum for discussion and dissemination of best practices around value-based purchasing — the next step in delivering value to customers. Value-based purchasing maximizes the effectiveness of programs and services offered to customers. It includes strategic purchasing and application of incentives to encourage uptake of proven interventions such as medication adherence or selection of high quality providers.
Adding Value complements the AAPPO ACT on Diabetes Initiative, a 2008 AAPPO initiative that provided PPO members with tools and resources to help plans, providers, payers and patients improve diabetes outcomes.
