AAPPO “Adding Value to PPO Diabetes Care"

AAPPO is pleased to announce our latest initiative to help members “add value” to the services they offer. The AAPPO ACT on Diabetes Initiative began the cycle by providing members with tools and resources to help plans, providers, payers and patients improve diabetes outcomes. The AAPPO Adding Value Initiative creates a forum for discussion and dissemination of best practices around value-based purchasing — the next step in delivering value to customers.

The began the cycle by providing members with tools and resources to help plans, providers, payers and patients improve diabetes outcomes. The AAPPO Adding Value Initiative creates a forum for discussion and dissemination of best practices around value-based purchasing — the next step in delivering value to customers.

Value-based purchasing is a strategy developed to maximize the effectiveness of programs and services offered to customers. It includes strategic purchasing and application of incentives to encourage uptake of proven interventions such as medication adherence or selection of high quality providers.

AAPPO’s initiative focuses on promising practices that
PPOs can deliver to customers including:
  • Maximizing pharmacy benefit programs to improve chronic disease outcomes
  • Bending the cost curve through investment in health and wellness
  • Enhancing adherence, improving outcomes
  • Applying incentives effectively to get results
  • Using value-based health care to improve results for payers

Value-based purchasing is a strategy of maximizing the value of services provided by the PPO and its partners. Visit this page to locate resources of value-based purchasing in network design, chronic care management, and pharmacy management.

White Paper
AAPPO is developing a white paper to examine value-based purchasing opportunities for PPOs and their partner organizations. The paper will be launched in February 2009 — check back then!

This initiative will educate PPO senior management, third-party administrators, disease management organizations and vendor partners to the industry. Participants will identify approaches that could be adopted to their own business model to “add value” to the services they deliver.
