Speaker Bios
D.W. Edington, Ph.D. is Director of the University of Michigan Health Management Research Center (UM-HMRC). He is also a Professor in the Division of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan and a research scientist in the School of Public Health. Trained in mathematics, kinesiology and biochemistry, Dr. Edington received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University and completed his M.S. at Florida State University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts before coming to Michigan in 1976. Dr. Edington is the author or co-author of over 500 articles, presentations, and several books, including Biology of Physical Activity, Biological Awareness, Frontiers of Exercise Biology, The One Minute Manager Gets Fit and the 2nd edition, The One Minute Manager Balances Work and Life.
Dr. Edington’s teaching and research focus on the relationship between healthy lifestyles, vitality and quality of life, as they benefit both individuals and organizations. He is specifically interested in how individual health promotion, worksite wellness activities and programs within organizations impact health care cost containment, productivity and human resource development. In essence, the HMRC studies the precursors to disease and vitality. The HMRC is dynamic, innovative and a world-class leader in driving towards information-driven decision making in the evolving new health care environment. Members of the HMRC team perform the statistical analyses required to examine associations between risks and costs, and to track trends over time. They also participate in the management of client data.
Jan E. Berger, M.D., M.J.
As Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for CVS Caremark, Jan Berger, M.D., is a member of the leadership team that sets the clinical strategy for the organization. She is also responsible for clinical appropriateness and consistency across all patient and provider touch points. The team of physicians, pharmacists and nurses within Dr Berger’s lead activities are associated with CVS Caremark’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee and support activities associated with retail services, governmental and lobbyist activities, and technology initiatives, which include e-prescribing and Internet activities, product development, Medicare Part D, and disease and health management. Dr. Berger has also taken a leadership role in representing CVS Caremark at a variety of national health care policy forums. Dr. Berger joined Caremark in August 1999.
Prior to coming to CVS Caremark, Dr. Berger had 15 years of experience in health care administration within the health plan and administrative arenas. Dr. Berger is a board-certified pediatrician with clinical experience in private practice, managed care, and academic medicine.
Considered a national health care thought leader, Dr. Berger speaks and writes on a wide variety of health care issues. She also serves on numerous health care boards and committees, on editorial advisory boards of several health care journals and has published over 100 articles and publications.
Dr. Berger is a “black belt” in Six Sigma, designating her as a team leader responsible for implementing process improvement projects within business to increase customer satisfaction and business productivity.
Dr. Berger holds both a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Masters degree in Jurisprudence from Loyola University in Chicago and has taken numerous courses in business management. She is also an assistant professor at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Evanston, Illinois.
Neal S. Sofian, MSPH – Director Behavioral Interventions, Resolution Health Inc.
Neal is recognized nationally for almost 30 years of innovation in population-based and corporate health promotion/management, disease management, and organizational change. Before coming to Resolution Health Neal was the CEO of the NewSof Group, a health consulting and multi media development group with a particular focus on social networking.
Previously Neal was the Vice President of Program Development for Lexant, a technology-centered population health services subsidiary of Monsanto. During a 15 year tenure at Group Health Cooperative Neal served as Director of Innovation and Manager of Worksite and Community Programs. While at GHC, Neal commercialized the Free & Clear Smoking Cessation Program, a pioneer and nationally recognized leader in telephonic behavioral interventions, in addition to many of the first telephonic and online disease management programs in diabetes and asthma.
Neal holds a master's degree in public health from the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine and serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Washington , School of Health Services . He is a nationally known speaker and author on topics ranging from the future of health management to integrating technologies into behavioral interventions, to humor as an organizational development tool.
John J. Mahoney, M.D., M.P.H.
John J. (Jack) Mahoney has recently retired from Pitney Bowes where, as Strategic Healthcare Initiatives Director at Pitney Bowes, he was a key team leader for the company’s innovative healthcare programs. Dr. Mahoney’s responsibilities included advanced healthcare planning for employees, integrating disease management and wellness initiatives, and benefits planning for employees and retirees. Subsequent to retiring from his full0time position, Dr. Mahoney has assumed the role of Chief Consultant for Strategic Health Initiatives at Pitney Bowes and continues to be active in shaping the company’s health care programs.
Dr. Mahoney joined Pitney Bowes in 1997 as Corporate Medical Director and Global Health Care Management Director. In this role he was responsible for designing health benefits for employees, and integrating disability and disease management and wellness initiatives. He also had oversight for all clinical support services.
Dr. Mahoney was instrumental in revamping the company’s health insurance system in 2002. At this time, Pitney Bowes became the first company in the country to fully implement the strategy known as value-based insurance design, in which the employer uses financial incentives to encourage workers to stay healthy. Medical plan design, as well as services related to direct on-site medical care delivery, wellness, fitness, employee assistance and disability management programs are included in this integrated approach to health.
Dr. Mahoney is co-author of two books that analyze the value-based insurance initiative: Total Value Total Return: Seven Rules for Optimizing Employee-Health Benefits for a Healthier and More Productive Workforce (2006) and BeneFIT Design: Seven Steps to Value-Based Health Benefit Decisions (2007). The response and requests for the first book were overwhelming and led to three print runs with 30,000 copies printed for distribution to businesses, municipalities, universities, benefits advisors and Fortune 500 CEOs.
Both books challenge traditional healthcare benefit plans and strategies and contribute to the healthcare industry’s discourse on providing evidence-based benefits and interventions in managing the health of employees.
Prior to joining Pitney Bowes, Dr. Mahoney served as Vice President of Integrated Health Management at Aetna Inc., where he was responsible for integrating all health-related employee programs within Aetna to achieve improved employee productivity and effectiveness. Dr. Mahoney was also a partner with Hewitt Associates LLC, designing a wide array of managed medical benefits programs. He also served as the Corporate Medical Director for GTE Corporation and held medical management positions in the airline industry.
Dr. Mahoney received his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He also received a Masters Degree in Public Health from UCLA.
Beth Keyser is a Vice President for the Employer Market at Healthways, a total population health management company, based in Nashville, TN. In this role, Beth works with employers, aligning appropriate solutions to meet their overall health improvement objectives.
Beth has been involved with wellness and health improvement since 1995. She began her career in wellness by building a successful corporate health management program for a 277 site financial institution in the Southeast. Additionally, she was part of the initial management team of a national health improvement company where she was responsible for contracted health management initiatives.
Beth is a Certified Health Education Specialist through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. and is also a Certified Health Promotion Director through the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research. Beth holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi College of Health and Human Science and an Executive Masters of Science in Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Beth serves on the boards of the Lisa Ross Parker Foundation and the Graduate Alumni Health Programs at UAB. Beth is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
